Kinesiology for Children

Looking beyond the symptoms to understand the whole child
Children don't always have the words to tell us what is going on inside.

You may notice big emotions, tummy aches, constipation or loose bowel movements, eczema, acne, hives or rashes, poor sleep, restlessness, difficulties at school, sensory sensitivities or simply a feeling that they are struggling more than they should be.

As a parent, you can often sense that something isn't quite right, even when you don't know exactly what it is.

This is where I use kinesiology to explore the child as a whole, looking at the physical, nutritional, emotional and energetic sides of their wellbeing, and how these different areas may be interacting.

My approach is to understand their individual patterns and find ways to support their nervous system, body and emotional wellbeing.

What might bring a child to kinesiology?

Children come to me for lots of different reasons.

You might be looking for support with:

Big emotions, anxiety & emotional wellbeing
  • Big or frequent emotional reactions

  • Anxiety or worries

  • Difficulty calming down after becoming upset

  • Emotional overwhelm

  • Low confidence or self-esteem

  • Feeling easily stressed

  • Difficulty expressing or processing emotions

  • Changes in behaviour that you don't quite understand

As a trained Children’s Emotion Coach, I have a particular interest in looking beyond the behaviour itself and asking what might be underneath it.

A child's behaviour is often communication.

Rather than simply asking "How do we stop this behaviour?", I like to explore "What is this child trying to tell us?"

Tummy troubles & gut health

Digestive symptoms are common in children and can affect much more than their digestion due to the interconnected nature of our body.

Parents may bring their child because of:

  • Tummy aches

  • Constipation

  • Bloating

  • Digestive discomfort

  • Food sensitivities

  • Fussy or restricted eating

  • Changes in appetite

  • A history of digestive difficulties

Through kinesiology, I can explore nutritional and digestive patterns alongside the child's wider nervous-system and emotional picture.

Focus, concentration & learning

Sometimes a child is capable but finds certain aspects of learning difficult.

You might notice:

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Restlessness or fidgeting

  • Difficulty sitting comfortably for periods of time

  • Struggling to complete tasks

  • Problems with handwriting

  • Reading or visual-tracking difficulties

  • Coordination difficulties

  • Feeling overwhelmed by school

  • A child who seems to "switch off" when learning becomes difficult

I may explore areas such as primitive reflexes, posture, movement, visual and auditory processing, nervous-system regulation and nutritional factors.

Sensory processing & nervous-system regulation

Some children experience the world very intensely.

Sounds, lights, textures, movement, touch and busy environments can sometimes feel like a lot.

Parents may notice that their child:

  • Is particularly sensitive to noise or touch

  • Becomes overwhelmed in busy environments

  • Seeks lots of movement

  • Finds transitions difficult

  • Has difficulty settling

  • Seems constantly "on the go"

  • Has strong reactions to sensory experiences

  • Needs a lot of support to regulate after a busy day

I may explore how the child's nervous system is responding to different types of sensory input and look at ways we can support greater ease and regulation.

Primitive Reflexes

Primitive reflexes are an important part of my work with children.

These are early automatic movement patterns that support a baby's development. As the nervous system matures, these reflexes are gradually integrated as more purposeful movement develops.

Sometimes I explore primitive reflexes when a child has difficulties with things such as:

  • Coordination and balance

  • Posture

  • Handwriting

  • Crossing the midline

  • Visual tracking

  • Motor planning

  • Body awareness

  • Sitting comfortably

  • Movement and physical confidence

  • Attention and regulation

  • Anxiety

  • Sensory Processing challenges

You can read more about my approach to primitive reflexes HERE.

How does a children's kinesiology session work?

There isn't a single way that a children's session looks. I work with the child in front of me rather than expecting them to fit the session, including adapting the time frame of a session to suit your child.

Before we begin, I will talk to you about what you have noticed and what has brought you to kinesiology. Your observations as a parent are incredibly important. This can be done over the phone to reduce the demands on your child in the session itself.

We then explore what appears to be most relevant for your child.

Depending on their age and needs, this includes a range of relevant gentle muscle testing and kinesiology techniques to support your child’s wellbeing.

Sessions are calm, unhurried and adapted to the child.

What if my child is too young to be tested?

This is something parents often ask me.

Children don't need to be able to understand or participate in the testing themselves.

For babies, toddlers and some younger children, I can use surrogate muscle testing through the parent.

This allows me to work with the child's information while using the parent's muscle response as the indicator.

The child can therefore remain close to you, play, feed, move around or simply be themselves while we work.

Surrogate testing can also be useful for children who are particularly anxious, sensory-sensitive or simply don't want to participate directly.

As children get older and more comfortable, I can often move towards direct testing with them where appropriate.

What do we actually explore?

I use your child's history and what you are noticing to help guide the session.

Depending on the information provided, we might explore areas such as:

Physical & neurological

  • Primitive reflexes

  • Posture and movement

  • Coordination and balance

  • Neurological patterns

  • Visual and auditory processing

  • Nervous-system regulation

  • TMJ patterns

Nutrition & digestion

  • Digestive function

  • Food and nutritional patterns

  • Gut health

  • Vitamins and minerals

  • Energy and resilience

Emotional

  • Stress and overwhelm

  • Emotional patterns

  • Confidence

  • Fear or anxiety

  • Difficult experiences

  • The relationship between emotions and physical symptoms

Energetic

As a qualified kinesiologist, I may also explore energetic patterns where these appear relevant to the individual child. Children often love meridian running or chakra balancing.

Sometimes we need to gently unpick several layers before we understand what is really going on.

Supporting the whole child

This is at the heart of how I work.

A child who struggles to concentrate may also have poor sleep.

A child with tummy problems may also be experiencing anxiety.

A child who is having issues at school may actually be overwhelmed by sensory input.

A child who struggles with handwriting may be working much harder physically than we realise.

There are often connections between things that, on the surface, seem completely unrelated.

My role is to help explore those connections.

Working alongside your child's existing support

Kinesiology is complementary.

It doesn't replace your child's GP, paediatrician, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, psychologist, school support or any other appropriate professional care.

If your child has a medical condition or is undergoing investigation or treatment, I encourage you to continue working with the relevant healthcare professionals.

My role is to offer another perspective and supportive approach alongside the care your child is already receiving.

What might you notice after a session?

Every child responds differently.

Sometimes parents notice quite a clear change in their child's mood, behaviour, sleep or physical comfort.

Sometimes changes are much more subtle.

Clients often find the most valuable outcome is simply having a better understanding of what their child may be experiencing and why.

I don't promise particular outcomes, because every child is different.

A gentle approach for children

I know from my experience of working with children and how my own children have responded to kinesiology, how beneficial sessions can be.

As well as supporting them with their symptoms, they find it helps the adults around them understand what might be happening beneath the surface.
